Places to see

  • Ely Cathedral is five minutes walk away from the house.  Click here for information about forthcoming services,  concerts, and special events.  Guided tours also available
  • Details of the Cathedral services and music can be found here
  • The Tourist Information Centre is located in Oliver Cromwell's House, just 3 mins away.
  • Wicken Fen is one of the most important wetland areas in Europe, with excellent walking, bird watching, and a great cafe
  • From Wicken, its a pleasant walk or cycle (bike hire there) to Anglesey Abbey which features a working water mill, impressive gardens and indeed the Jacobean-style house itself
Places to eat
  • We always recommend The Old Fire Engine House which serves excellent home-cooked food made from locally sourced produce.  Its wonderful and homely.  Always busy.  Furthermore its 3 mins walk from Number 19.   It doesn't have a site as far as we're aware, but this is its page on the Ely Tourist Board site. We recommend booking a table 01353 662582.
  • The Riverside (15 mins walk) is a foodie haven depending on your choice and preferences in eating houses. The Boathouse is widely regarded as one of the best, quite interesting, and excellent service.
  • Peacocks Tea Room is also worth a visit - very traditional
  • For pub meals, The Minster Tavern just by the Cathedral West Door (6 mins)
  • Of course we always encourage people to visit the Cathedral outlets too.  There's a quaint cafe actually in the Cathedral - don't pay the Cathedral entrance fee unless you wish to - just head into the cafe.  Also the Almonry Restaurant which has  a vaulted roof and is at the opposite end of the Cathedral campus - 10 mins away.  Known to be popular with the locals on Market days, it only does lunches, but is 'big food', ie lots on the plate.  Well cooked though!
Perhaps also have a look at the Food and Drink tab on the Visit Ely site?

Ely train station is a short taxi ride or a manageable walk from Number 19. This puts Number 19  just over an hour away from central London and a realistic journey for the Olympic Games venues
